Course Description:
The AP Spanish Language and Culture course emphasizes communication through interpersonal, interpretive, and presentational skills in real-life situations. This includes vocabulary usage, language control, communication strategies, and cultural awareness explored through 6 main themes with subthemes. AP Spanish Language and Culture course strives not to overemphasize grammatical accuracy at the expense of communication but to facilitate comprehensible communication.
The course is taught almost exclusively in Spanish and engages students in an exploration of culture in both contemporary and historical contexts. The course develops students’ awareness and appreciation of cultural products (e.g., tools, books, music); practices (patterns of social interactions within a culture); and perspectives (values, attitudes, and assumptions). This course is recommended for students that have shown an ability to effectively communicate in the language and understand the culture from Spanish 3 Honors and up.
Prerequisite:
Teacher recommendation from a Honors/Regular Algebra I, a Honors/AP Chemistry, or a Honors/Regular Geometry teacher is recommended. There are no prerequisites; however, students are typically in their third or fourth year of high school–level Spanish language study. In the case of heritage or native speakers, there may be a different pathway of study leading to this course.
Relevant Careers:
